AASHTO LRFD SUBSTRUCTURE DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS:PRACTICAL AND RESEARCH ISSUES
Y. Frank Chen, Ph.D., P.E.
Professor of Civil Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, USA
Abstract
Relatively new issues related to practical analysis and design of bridge substructures will first be presented, followed by the relevant research issues. They include live-load surcharge, overturning, bearing, earthquake induced earth pressure, earth pressure theory, effective pile length, pile friction-bearing interaction, rock socket depth, dynamic soil-pile interaction, and load and resistance factor design (load & resistance factors) among others. The primary purposes of this presentation are to open up the discussion on the subject matter and to generate common research interests.
